Lisa LaFlamme, one of Canada’s most respected journalists and news anchors, was the keynote speaker for the 2023 Alex Trebek Distinguished Lecture Series. Her fireside conversation with uOttawa communications professor, Dr. Elizabeth Dubois, showcased Lisa LaFlamme’s characteristic warmth and thoughtfulness.
Her comments were sometimes funny and lighthearted, while at other times compelled the audience to act in defense of the institution of journalism. She reflected on the future of journalism and its role in upholding democracy. She went on to talk about a cause that is close to her heart: Championing the rights of women in Afghanistan.
The event was a return to her alma mater for Ms. LaFlamme, who is a uOttawa graduate (BA '88) and recipient of an Honorary doctorate (2014). She also received the Alumni Association’s highest honour, the Meritas-Tabaret Award for Alumni Achievement.
Two of this year’s special guests were Jean Trebek, the late Alex Trebek’s wife, and their son, Matthew.

The University of Ottawa welcomes seven new Francophone Mobility Chairs
During the 2023-2024 academic year, uOttawa’s Collège des chaires de recherche sur le monde francophone (CCRMF) will welcome six foreign researchers as part of its Francophone Mobility Chairs program: André Magord, Yann Raison du Cleuziou, Jean-Alain Goudiaby, Michael Falser, Opêoluwa Blandine Agbaka, and Somnoma Edouard Kaboré. The College also welcomes Nicolas Peyre, who was named to a Francophone Mobility Chair in 2020 but whose stay here was postponed several times due to the pandemic.
Each guest chair is a leading expert in their respective field and will be on campus for a few months to hold workshops, give lectures, and collaborate on research and knowledge mobilization on the Francophonie.

QS Rankings: uOttawa places 72nd globally for sustainability
The 2024 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for Sustainability were published on December 5 and the University of Ottawa improved its placement from the 200’s last year to 72nd out of 1403 universities located across 95 countries.
The QS Sustainability framework highlights the ways in which universities are tackling the world’s most pressing challenges. It evaluates universities based on data used in the QS World University Rankings and measures research output related to the 17 UN Sustainable Development goals along with the results of reputation surveys.
