To that end, Tracy Vaillancourt, Canada Research Chair in School-Based Mental Health and Violence Prevention, is exploring an important and often neglected root cause of mental health problems: bullying.

The purpose of this research chair, held by Jess Whitley, is to examine how mental health, and disabilities, contribute to chronic school absenteeism, a growing concern in Canada. Involving diverse communities, in partnership with the Crossroads Children’s Mental Health Centre, her research seeks to better understand and address barriers to school attendance. By creating new knowledge and practical strategies, her work aims to improve outcomes for vulnerable students locally and globally.
