The Research Office shares funding news through its faculty newsletter and regular email announcements about internal and external funding initiatives, including international research funding opportunities. The Office also maintains a frequently-updated list of funding opportunities online, within the Information for Researchers section of both the Common Law and Droit civil websites. Researchers can also learn about funding announcements through the Research Management Services’ newsletter. RMS also maintains a funding opportunities database.

Research Management Services: Funding Opportunities Database

Indicate your intention to apply for a research grant as soon as possible by writing to the Research Office.

Some grants may require a letter of support from the Section, an institutional signature, or matching funds. It is important to allow enough time for the Research Office to prepare these ahead of the deadline.

• Meet with the Research Advisor to discuss the project
• Request an example of a past successful application
• Consult our tools and resources
• Participate in training workshops
• Get information on rules, requirements and internal and external deadlines
• Review advice for writing a successful SSHRC application
• Have your application reviewed by the Research Office

Certain grant programs require contributions from the Faculty of Law and/or the University that are usually confirmed in a letter of support (ex: SSHRC Connection Grants, internal uOttawa programs, SSHRC Partnership Grants, etc.). The Research Office can assist you in obtaining the required letter and signature.

Research Data Management (RDM):

Researchers are encouraged to take into consideration the ways in which they will manage their research data, ensure responsible research conduct, and establish and implement data management practices. As part of their Research Data Management Plans, researchers need to reflect on securely and sustainably storing research data and on continued accessibility and reusability of this data.

Knowledge Mobilization:

Knowledge Mobilization means promoting and facilitating the use of research among knowledge users (stakeholders, decision makers, policy makers, practitioners, community members, patients, etc.) to help them make informed decisions about policies, programs, practices and behaviours. It encompasses a wide range of activities relating to the production and use of knowledge generated from research such as knowledge synthesis, dissemination, and co-creation by researchers and knowledge users.

The Research Office can offer support in developing a Knowledge Mobilization strategy and activities.

The Tri-Agency Financial Administration Guide is the main source for principles and directives that govern grant administration. Note that Tri-Agency principles stipulate that funds must be used effectively and economically, and that expenses must be essential to the research for which the funds were awarded.

Consult SSHRC Guidelines for Cash and In-Kind Contributions to determine the eligibility of contributions for SSHRC grants.

Consult the OVPRI’s Budget section for detailed advice on how to prepare a budget for SSHRC applications, including hiring student assistants, travel costs, and professional and technical services.

The University requires that grant applications be accompanied by an RE form. Please send your completed RE form to Natalie Carter at [email protected] to obtain the signature of the Vice-Dean of Research. Once signed, the Research Office will forward the form to RMS to complete the file.

If you need support in completing the RE form, please contact the Research Office. Note that without a completed RE form, the finance department cannot open an account to deposit your awarded research funds.

Before submitting your grant application, do a final check and send it to the Research Advisor, Anna Bogic, at [email protected] for a last review.

When ready to submit, researchers should confirm the submission process with the Research Office and send the final, submitted version of the application to our office, if applicable.

Tri-Council applications (SSHRC, CIHR, NSERC) are usually submitted through a tri-agency portal and must be approved by the institution. Once you have submitted your application, an RMS Grants Officer will contact the Faculty Research Advisor to confirm the submission of the application.
