Research and Clinical Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine

Learn more about our Research, Clinical Anesthesiology and Medical Education Fellowship with the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.

Program Overview

The Ottawa Hospital is one of Canada’s largest and most research-intensive academic health sciences centres. In partnership with the University of Ottawa and its School of Epidemiology & Public Health, our Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and Centre for Practice Changing Research are international leaders in health research. Leveraging these unique resources, along with its internationally recognized scientists in the fields of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine, The University of Ottawa Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine offers a one- up to three-year Fellowship in ‘Research and Clinical Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine’. These Fellowship are supervised by CIHR-funded clinician-scientists in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine - Dr. Sylvain Boet, Dr. Manoj Lalu and Dr. Daniel I McIsaac. This fellowship is intended to support the development of future clinician researchers and scientists interested in perioperative programs of research.

The Ottawa Hospital

The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) provides more than 25,000 surgeries across 3 distinct campuses in Ottawa’s city centre as Eastern Ontario’s referral centre for Trauma, Vascular and Neurosurgery, Complex Oncology and Orthopedics, as well as Hyperbaric medicine. Along with hosting the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Centre for Practice for Practice-Changing Research, and Ottawa Methods Centre, TOH features a core ICES site to access provincial health administrative data, and The Ottawa Hospital DataWarehouse, a world leading data centre based on our fully integrated electronic health record.

Goals and Objectives

The purpose of the Anesthesia Research and Clinical Fellowship Program is to train clinician-scientists in anesthesiology who will become leaders in Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine Research. This Fellowship Program involves a minimum of one year in duration, with preferably a two-year commitment, and a maximum of three-year.

This will be achieved by:

  • Working with the Fellow to develop a Research plan that addresses their professional goals in academic Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine. Preferably we will identify an area of interest focus with strong overlap between the fellow’s interests and supervisor’s areas of active investigation.

  • Providing training in Research through a combination of didactic study, research practice, and intensive individual mentorship in research methods and dissemination, including publication;

  • Engagement into a Masters or PhD program is encouraged;

  • Providing experience in study design, statistical analysis and/or qualitative analysis, project management, and grant writing;

  • Integrating the Fellows into the activities of an academic Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.

Clinical and Academic Responsibilities

  • To provide intensive research training and experience in ‘Clinical Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine’. Knowledge Translation and Practice Changing Research will be the core of the training and experience.

  • To tailor fellow’s training to meet their future needs, including population-based epidemiology, knowledge synthesis, clinical trials and patient-oriented research

  • To prepare clinician-scientists who wish to be future leaders in perioperative, pain and anesthesiology research.

Academic Supervision

This will be achieved through:

  • Working with the Fellow to develop a research plan aligned with their professional goals in academic Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, with a strong focus on research. Our scientists have extensive experience in clinical research methods (quantitative and qualitative), knowledge synthesis,  education research, preclinical and translational research, clinical trials and Database research (including predictive analytics and comparative effectiveness);

  • Providing training in research through a combination of didactic study, research practice and intensive individual mentorship in research methods and dissemination, including publication and patient/public engagement;

  • Engagement into a Masters or PhD program will be encouraged;

  • Providing experience in study design, statistical analysis and/or qualitative analysis, project management, and grant writing;

  • Integrating the fellows into the activities of an academic Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.

Academic Responsibilities

The goals of the fellowship will be achieved via formal and informal teaching, as follows:

  • Commitment to completion of at least two research projects (from research question to publication, including applying for research grants);

  • Presentation of research project at the Department’s Annual Gary Johnson Research Day;

  • Submission of abstracts to national and/or international meetings

  • Participation / attendance in Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Rounds, Research in progress seminars and other activities.

Clinical Responsibilities

The Fellow will be expected to practice anesthesiology independently in all subspecialty areas.

Research Field

The Fellow will work on studies related to existing ‘Knowledge Translation and Practice Changing Research’ in anesthesiology. Areas of expertise in our Department include:

  • Clinical trials
  • Knowledge synthesis
  • Education and feedback
  • Prehabilitation
  • Hyperbaric medicine
  • Perioperative cellular therapy
  • Health systems evaluation
  • Geriatric periopeartive research
  • Journalology
  • The Fellow will contribute to a dynamic and productive research program aiming to optimize perioperative clinical practice.

Competencies upon Fellowship Completion

Upon completion of the Research Fellowship, the Fellow will be able to:

  • Design, conduct, and manage an independent research project;
  • Successfully compete for extramural research funding;
  • Serve as a clinician-researcher in an academic Anesthesia Department.

Expectations during the Fellowship

The Fellow will be expected to achieve several deliverables within his/her Fellowship year. Progress will be assessed every 3 months in order to provide specific guidance and adjustment of the work, if necessary. The Fellow is expected to formulate and conduct at least two research projects, from the idea to publication, during each fellowship year.

The specific expectations from the Fellow are:

  • To familiarize themselves with the environment during the first month of the Fellowship, set a research plan, and determine the specific projects in collaboration with their supervisor;

  • To acquire basic knowledge of protocol development, including literature search techniques for online databases, research design, statistical analysis, and interpretation of results;
  • To participate on an interdisciplinary research team, and successfully implement studies;
  • To identify funding opportunities, and develop grant writing skills;

To write up study results, and/or review articles for publication, and to disseminate findings through poster and podium presentations. A minimum of three submissions for publication, and preferably four, is expected during each year of the Fellowship. Publications will be full papers submitted to peer-reviewed journals indexed in

The Centre for Practice-Changing Research

The Centre houses clinicians and researchers working in areas such as pregnancy and newborn health, kidney disease, lung disease, infectious disease, cardiovascular disease and blood diseases. The Centre for Practice-Changing Research is dedicated to translating research evidence into changes in clinical practice. It headquarters Knowledge Translation Canada, a national network in knowledge translation.
