The Faculty of Medicine’s Centre for Innovation in Medical Education (CiMED) offers a variety of educational events throughout the year.

OCTANE faculty development program

This interactive, case-based session brings professionalism out of the abstract and into real scenarios drawn from clinical and educational practice. Together, we will explore grey zones, develop confidence in identifying and addressing lapses, and learn how to support a respectful and inclusive workplace. This session is suited to all faculty members, especially front-line teachers and educational leaders committed to fostering excellence in the learning environment.

Did That Cross a Line? A Practical Guide to Professionalism for Faculty of Medicine

Professionalism is more than a policy — it is a daily practice that shapes our workplace and the learning environment, supports psychological safety, and defines our culture at the Faculty of Medicine. Yet, it is also one of the most challenging areas to navigate in real life. As faculty members, we are expected to model professional behavior, recognize when boundaries are crossed, and respond appropriately when concerns arise involving learners or colleagues.

This activity is approved for Mainpro+ and RCPSC section 1 credits

Why Do They Call it a Learning Curve? How to Use the Non-linearity of Learning to Improve Your Education Programs and Research - May 29, 2026 from 8h30-9h30.
Dr. Pusic

Ever wonder why they call it Learning Curve? In this session we will explore how learning works at a fundamental level that applies widely throughout health professions education.

The elements of a prototypical learning curve, including the latent phase, inflection points and asymptote, are described as they relate to competency development. We will discuss the implications of this evident non-linearity of learning in terms of effective instructional design all along the continuum.

Dr. Pusic is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at the Harvard Medical School, a practicing Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician at the Boston Children’s Hospital, and Scholar in Residence at the Brigham Education Institute. He is also Director of the Research and Education Foundation at the American Board of Medical Specialties where he encourages scholarly approaches to certification of medical expertise.
