In exceptional circumstances, the School of Social Work offers a 2nd option for the 2nd year of our Master's program (30 credits). This option concerns a minority of the candidates we receive.

The structure allows a student admitted to the 2nd year of the program with a specialized undergraduate degree in social work and 3 or more years of continuous work experience in social work (after obtaining this degree) to replace the 6 credits of the research-intervention internship with two optional courses of grade 6000, totalling 6 additional credits and already part of the available courses. These six course credits will be taken in the second semester of the 2nd year. Like other students at this level, they will concurrently take: SVS 6515 Préparation au mémoire de recherché and SVS 6530 Séminaire d’intégration en recherche-intervention. The theory-practice links within the latter seminar will give greater prominence to their past experience and course content. Students will also be required to write a thesis in the following semester.

This policy applies to students who meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in social work.
  • Have a minimum of three years full-time social work experience in social service or health organizations, including community organizations; this work experience must have been acquired before the start of the first courses taken in the Master's program in social work.
  • Intervention experience must be recent, i.e. obtained within the 5 years preceding the start of the courses (excluding parental and study leaves).
  • Have received ongoing supervision from a professional with a degree in social work or a related field relevant to social work practice.

Students wishing to take advantage of this option must:

  • Submit a request for eligibility to the person in charge of graduate studies, including a resume, a copy of on-the-job evaluations, and an attestation(s) of employment. Specify the number of hours worked and job titles. This request must be submitted by September 15th of the registration semester preceding the date normally scheduled for the research-intervention internship. The review of the professional file will be completed by September 30th, and eligibility confirmed by the Graduate Studies Manager.
