The Newman lab utilizes modern tools and technologies to solve fundamental problems in chemical synthesis. New methods and processes are developed with the end goal of achieving sustainable access to important pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. Some of the expertise include transition metal catalysis, flow chemistry and high throughput screening. Our lab approaches these fields with a mechanistic approach, seeking to understand the fundamental behaviour of a system and then exploiting that knowledge to increase scope and efficiency. Key topics of interest include cross coupling reactions, biomass utilization, continuous recycling reactors, and multi-step flow synthesis.
The Newman lab supervises students within the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Sciences with an interest in organic synthesis, organometallics, or chemical reaction engineering.
