The Coordinator of Practica and Internships (CPI) deals with questions related to the clinical training components of the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology, that is, the practicum and internship. The CPI executes their functions in consultation with the Director of the Clinical Program who remains responsible for the decision. Questions of an academic nature remain under the responsibility of the Director of the Clinical Program, whereas questions dealing with the clinical training are primarily the responsibility of the CPI.

1. Practicum

The CPI works on the planning of the practicum activities at the Centre for Psychological Services and Research and in external sites, in order to ensure that each student registered in the practicum completes, in the appropriate time, the number of hours required by the Clinical Program for the practicum. The CPI makes the necessary liaisons with the practicum supervisors in external sites. The CPI monitors the quality of clinical activities offered to students doing the practicum. The CPI is responsible for the evaluation of external sites which plan to offer practicum activities to our students, and the CPI decides on the approval of practicum sites following the criteria of the Clinical Program. The CPI takes decisions concerning the request of students who want to pursue practicum activities beyond the number of hours required by the Clinical Program following current policy and procedures. The CPI coordinates evaluations of students' performance in the context of the practicum.

2. Internship

Relationship with Internship Centres

The CPI receives the proposals from unaccredited internship centres which plan to offer clinical activities at the internship level. The CPI decides on their approval following the criteria and the procedures established by the Clinical Program. The CPI maintains the liaison with the external centres in the context of internships. The CPI organizes the periodical meetings with the persons responsible for internships in clinical units of the Ottawa region. The CPI chairs at least one annual meeting with these persons. The CPI maintains relationships with the internship centres which supervise our students in order to ensure the quality of training and the follow up of evaluations. In the case of unsatisfactory evaluations, the CPI discusses the matter with the supervisors involved in the case. The CPI can decide to bring the problematic cases for discussion to the Clinical Program Committee.

Relationship with agencies such as CPA, CPO

The CPI ensures that the objectives of the clinical program are pursued and that the guidelines of CPA are followed with regard to clinical training, practicum, and internship. The CPI maintains the liaison with these agencies for questions related to clinical training. In close consultation with the Director of the Clinical Program, the CPI or the Director of the Clinical Program participates in the annual meeting of these agencies.

Guidance, placement, follow-up, and evaluation of interns

The CPI, in consultation with the Director of the Clinical Program, determines the admissibility of students for internship according to the policies and procedures of the School of Psychology. The CPI provides guidance to the students who need information on internships. The CPI receives and maintains up to date the files of internship centres which offer a program of training and the CPI informs the students accordingly. The CPI organizes a yearly meeting in September with students who plan to start their internship the following September in order to inform them concerning internship policy, applications procedures, internship offers, and any other relevant issue. At the same time, the CPI organizes the annual meeting with the person responsible for internships at local internship centres and the students. In collaboration with the Director of the Clinical Program, the CPI writes the letters of recommendation for students who apply to internships, letters which are co-signed by the CPI and the Director of the Clinical Program. The CPI remains available to meet with students individually to review the choices for internships, to discuss them and to approve them. The CPI is the student's advisor for all questions related to internships. The CPI remains available on the selection day, the 2nd Monday of February, in order to answer all questions from internship centres and to solve any problematic cases of students with no placement. The CPI receives the evaluation of interns and insures that these evaluations are kept in the student's file. The CPI refers any problem of unsatisfactory evaluation to the Clinical Program Committee.

3. Evaluation and Nomination of Clinical Professors

In collaboration with the Director of the Clinical Program, the CPI evaluates the proposals for nominations and renewals of mandate of clinical professors and proceeds with the recommendations to the Director of the School of Psychology, who is the chair of the Teaching Personnel Committee of the School of Psychology.

4. Committees
