Prior to beginning an internship, students must have completed all academic requirements except the thesis.

Registration limits

Given the registration limits of the clinical psychology program, the majority of students are expected to have successfully defended the thesis prior to, or during, the internship. As of 2021, in order to be permitted to apply for an internship, by October 1st of the application year, students normally (a) must have an approved thesis proposal and data collection completed and (b) should be on track to complete data analyses and a draft of the thesis prior to beginning the internship. The decision to allow a student to apply for internship will be made by the Coordinator of Practica and Internships in consultation with the Clinical Program Director.

In accordance with CPA accreditation standards, we normally require students to complete their internships at CPA or APA accredited internship sites. When circumstances warrant (e.g., language of training, career interests), a student may be permitted to complete the internship at non-accredited site or sites. The decision to allow a student to apply to non-accredited internship sites will be made by the Coordinator of Practica and Internships in consultation with the Clinical Program Director.

The School of Psychology has a policy entitled “Criteria and Procedures for Approval of External Practicum and Internship Training Settings” that will be used in evaluating any non-accredited site to which a student applies. It is the student's responsibility to provide the Coordinator of Practica and Internships with the necessary information on any non-accredited site to which they wish to apply, except for the sites in the Ottawa area that currently meet the School's criteria.
