Language assessment for French immersion stream

This test measures the 4 language skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) The test is separated into 2 parts, you will only move to the second part if you meet French Immersion standards on part 1.

Part 1 : listening and reading

(This part of the test is used to assess whether your level of understanding is high enough to take university courses in French.)

• Three listening passages consisting of a recorded conversation or lecture and multiple-choice questions related to the recording. You will hear the recording twice.

• Three reading passages which consist of a text which you must read and multiple-choice questions related to the text.

• One fill-in the-blank activity which consists of a passage in which words have been deleted. You must choose, from the multiple-choice options, the words that best fit the blanks.

Part 2 : speaking and writing

(This part of the test is used to determine which FLS (French as a Second Language) courses you can enroll in.)

• Speaking: You will record spoken responses to a variety of questions. To prepare your answers for some of the questions, you will read a text or listen to a recording.

• Writing: You will type a written response to a topic.

To access to the test, you must:

• Have a student number and a uOttawa e-mail address.

Test Fees

A $33.00 non-refundable fee will be added to your Statement of account which can be viewed in uoZone. Please ensure that you access and run the right test.

Request access to the test

1. Log into your Xpresslab account.

2. Find the Immersion Entry Test in the list of tests available on your dashboard.

3. Click on the Request Access button next to the Immersion Entry Test. When the pop-up appears, click the Request Access button in the pop-up. Usually, within two business days, you will receive an email granting you access to the test.

Note: If you do not use your @uottawa.ca email account, please change your email in your XpressLab profile to receive email notifications

Take the test

To have access to your test results, you must:

• Open a session in the XpressLab - Language testing portal.
• Find the Immersion Entry Test in the Test History section.
• Click on the Result Report button next to the Immersion Entry Test.
• In your results report you will find a Test Result Code, and brief description of your results that will tell you if you are eligible for the French Immersion Stream.
