Translational and Molecular Medicine (TMM) inspires students to engage in biomedical discovery. Our program emphasizes hands on research of cellular and molecular disease mechanisms and its impact on human health, and provides hands-on research experiences in a collaborative and supportive environment to foster academic excellence, critical thinking and professional development.

Welcome from the Director

Welcome to the Translational and Molecular Medicine (TMM) Honours BSc program. TMM is a collaborative program between the researchers at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and its affiliate healthcare institutes. Admitted students join the TMM program for their 3rd and 4th years of their undergraduate education after they have completed two years of a degree in Science or Health Science at uOttawa or an equivalent foundation at a Canadian or international university. A TMM student can expect extensive experiential and active learning opportunities with an emphasis on solving current problems in biomedical science. The program is designed to integrate theory with practical hands-on learning. Integral to this experience is becoming a contributing member of one or more research groups in fields such as aging, bioinformatics, biomaterials, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, structural biology, virology and many more.

Highlights of the TMM experience:

  • Engage in small class sizes with high professor to student ratios.
  • Discover a unique bacteriophage as part of the SEA-PHAGE program.
  • Select a research placement in a lab in the faculty of medicine or institute.
  • Communicate your work through posters and seminars.
  • Participate in disease focused courses that emphasize active learning.
  • Train with unique advanced methods courses in cutting edge lab skills.
  • Develop an aptitude for scientific communication.
  • Join a lab for your undergraduate thesis, with the option for an integrated MSc/PHD.
  • Explore your interests with a degree that is tailored by you.

We take a keen interest in our students’ career aspirations and have designed the program to meet their needs. After graduating from TMM, many students enter medicine, dentistry, law, optometry and other professional degrees. Our students are also highly qualified for graduate school and many of our alumni continue in biomedical research. If you have a passion for research and discovery, please consider TMM.
