To be eligible for these courses, you must meet certain requirements:
Undergraduate level:
When applying and during the semester preceding the Field Research Course:
- Must be in good academic standing
- Must be registered full time (Fall 2023 and Winter 2024), in an Honours Bachelor offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and have the Faculty of Social Sciences as your home faculty.
- Must have completed 54 university credits in their program of study (by May - preceding the date of departure).
- You must submit your application to the courses by completing the online form by the prescribed date.
- Sign the Code of Conduct (PDF, 31 KB) and commit to attending the pre-departure trainings
- Commit to purchase the airline ticket and travel insurance according to the Faculty of Social Sciences criteria
- Commit to leave with the other participants on the same flight (students must travel together, no exception)
- Be legally able to travel to the Field Research Country
- Conform to the host country's sanitary measures and the travel advice and advisories from the Canadian government
- You must meet the specific language requirements for the course (written and oral ability in French or English depending on the language of the course).
- If you are registered in the coop program, you must advise them of your interest of participating in the Field Research Course before handing in your admission request.
Graduate Students
- Must be registered in a M.A. program at the Faculty of Social Sciences
- Must inform their department and seek approval from the thesis/MRP supervisor to register for the field research course
- You must submit your application to the courses by completing the online form by the prescribed date
- Sign the Code of Conduct (PDF, 31 KB)
- Attend ALL the pre-departure trainings
- Conform to the host country's sanitary measures and the travel advice and advisories from the Canadian government
- Commit to leave with the other participants on the same flight (students must travel together, no exception)
- Purchase the airline ticket and travel insurance according to the Faculty of Social Sciences criteria.
- You must meet the specific language requirements for the course (written and oral ability in French or English depending on the language of the course).
- If you are registered in the coop program, you must advise them of your interest of participating in the Field Research Course before handing in your admission request.
You must complete the online registration form for the Field Research Course before November 20 2023. Please read the form carefully before completing it.
You can choose up to two Field Research Courses: your number one choice and your number two choice. If you are not interested in any other course than your number one choice, you do not have to indicate a second choice.
When you have submitted your online application you will received a confirmation of admission request e-mail. Please keep this e-mail as it is proof that you have submitted the online application before the deadline.
The professor of your number one choice will be sent the files of all the students that have selected their course as first choice. They will select 15 students out of the applications (10 for the Germany course) and a wait list. Students who have not been selected for their number one choice will then be offered that their application be submitted to the professor of their number two choice IF there is still place in that course.
Please note there is a maximum of fifteen (15) students per course. Priority is given to students for which the course can count in their program of study to complete a requirement. If this course represents additional units, the student will not be considered for selection.
If you are accepted for the course, you will receive an e-mail in December advising you of the next steps to take. You will need to confirm your participation in the course by return e-mail.
In addition to your course registration form, you will have to prepare certain documents before your departure. Please submit the following by the stipulated dates see Important dates section below:

Undergraduate Students:
If selected, you must register to one of the following six (6) credits course code:
FSS 3210 (if you have completed 54 credits in your program of study by April)
FSS 4210 (if you have completed 81 credits in your program of study by April)
ECH 4210 (if you have completed 54 credits in your program of study - only for student in the Conflict Studies and Human Rights program)
The course could count as optional or electives depending on your program. The Field Placement Coordinator will inform you of the application of these credits in your program of study (according to your academic progress)
Registration will take place by email with [email protected]. We will write to you when it is time to register (summer course registration is in April)
The course will count for the summer semester. Undergraduate students will not be able to participate in the June convocation because they must maintain their registration throughout the summer semester (even if the course count as additional credits in your program of study). If you have completed all your requirements, you will then graduate in October. If that is your situation, contact the Finance Services early on to make arrangements.
Please note that if you have unpaid late tuition fees listed in your student account, we will not be able to register you. If you are not registered, you cannot leave to participate in the course. You will then be financially responsible for any costs resulting from this situation. If that is your situation, contact the Finance Services early on to make arrangements.
Graduate Students
If selected, you will register for a three credits course with your department. Your department will register you for the course.
The course will count for the summer semester. Graduate students will not be able to participate in the June convocation because they must maintain their registration throughout the summer semester (even if the course count as additional credits in your program of study). If you have completed all your requirements, you will then graduate in October. If that is your situation, contact the Finance Services early on to make arrangements.

Travel
The Faculty will handle the procurement of airline tickets along with everything related to your visit during the field study course.
Travel insurance: The travel insurance will be bought with your airline ticket. No other travel insurance will be accepted.
Please note that the duration of your trip, should you extend your stay, will impact on your flight and insurance costs.
The departure date will be the same for all the students in the group. This means that you will all be on the same departure flight. Your return date however is up to you.
Accommodations
We will make arrangements for your stay in your host country. In some countries, you will pay for the onsite meals and housing in advance. In some countries, you will be notified of the amount to bring for food and housing costs.
You are required to settle the costs (airline tickets, insurance and food and accommodations if indicated) before your departure based on the payment breakdown. See Important dates below.
Accommodation fees for the course must be paid by January 19, 2024. Some prices are subject to change, please refer to your acceptance email for the final costs. Refunds are not available after payment.
The airline ticket and travel insurance must be purchased in February 2024 through uOttawa's selected travel agency. Costs may vary according to prices at the moment of purchase, the length of your stay, your personal itinerary, etc. Any changes to the airline ticket will be at the student's own expense.

Tuition Fees
Tuition fees are separate from the costs listed below. These fees vary according to your status and your program. For more information on tuition fees, please consult the Office of the Registrar. Tuition fees are to be paid according to the dates set by the registrar.
Vaccines
Vaccines costs are the responsibility of the student, Some are mandatory to enter the host country. Please consult a travel clinic and your family doctor for recommendations. Also consult the Travel.gc.ca website to find out the Canadian Government recommendations according to your host country for more information. Students must adhere to sanitary measures in the host country.

BRAZIL - Course offered in English to undergraduate students - May 13 to June 3rd, 2024
Bursary: $1250.00 - will be deposited in student account after the course
To be paid before you leave
- Accommodations $2,956.00 (to be paid January 19 2024) (includes food, educational excursion and local transportation)
- Airline ticket and travel insurance to $2205.00 (to be purchased in February 2024)

- recommended to have up-to-date tetanus and hepatitis vaccines, please consult your travel health provider
- Extra $400 (cover extra evening meals, weekends and personal purchases)
- In addition, Brazil is bringing back a visa requirement. It was supposed to start in October but was pushed to January. However, please allow between $55-75 dollars for an evisa, obtained online through Brazilian government and valid for multiple entries for two years. International students are also likely to need a visa. Please note that we are currently waiting for updates from the Brazilian government.
FRANCE - Course offered in French at the undergraduate level - May 24 to June 14, 2024

South Korea- Course offered in English at the graduate and undergraduate level - June 29 to July 13, 2024

- Accommodations: Ehwa University covers the housing fees along with certain meals and the program(excluding educational excursions)
- Airline Ticket and Travel Insurance $2000 (to be purchased in February 2024)

You are responsible for securing your passport and/or visa. You must have a valid passport before leaving the country as well as a visa for the country you are visiting, if necessary. You can begin the process of obtaining these documents once you are accepted into the course. Be sure to leave enough time to receive your passport and/or visa. You must provide us with a photocopy of your passport. For information on the necessary steps, consult the Passport Canada website.
If you plan to travel after the Field Research Course, you must make sure to have the appropriate travel documents. Please consult the links below and contact the appropriate authorities of the host country.
Nationals from other countries are responsible to undertake the appropriate steps to find out what are the requirements and fees, according to their status, for travel documents in the host country.
If you are accepted, undergraduate and graduate students, who are going abroad will receive financial aid.
Morocco: $250 from the Faculty of Social Sciences, and $250 from the International Office
France: $250 from the Faculty of Social Sciences and $250 from the International Office
Brazil: $1000 from the Faculty of Social Sciences and $250 from the International Office
Mexico: $500 from the Faculty of Social Sciences and $500 from the International Office
Senegal: $500 from the Faculty of Social Sciences and $250 from the International Office
South Korea: $250 from the Faculty of Social Sciences and $250 from the International Office
These amounts will be deposited in your student account in July and August
