Four alumni named to the Order of Canada
On December 29, 2021 the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, announced 135 new appointments to the Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, in recognition of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation.

The Common Law Section is particularly proud of the appointment of five individuals with connections to our Section; through their accomplishments, they have helped build a better Canada:

The Honourable Justice Hugh L. Fraser, LLB ’77
For his transformative contributions to Canadian sport as an internationally recognized expert in sports law and as a former Olympian.

Vahan Kololian, LLB ’79
For his community leadership and for his commitment to promoting Canadian diversity and pluralism.

Deborah Chatsis, LLM ’98
For her leadership as the first woman of a First Nation to serve as ambassador for Canada, and for her advocacy of human rights around the globe.

The Honourable Murray Sinclair, Honorary Doctorate DU ’99
For his commitment to the representation of Indigenous legal issues, and for his dedication to reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians.

Professor Emeritus Edward J. Ratushny
For his contributions to the field of administrative law, and for his leadership in sports arbitration and law.
