Who - What - Where - When - Why?
- Students with a GPA of 8.0/10 (A-) and above
- Academic Merit Scholarships
- Via appropriate portals
- 8-16 months before the beginning of your program of studies
- Substantial amounts – $15,000 minimum for one year
Being well prepared
- Identify two professors who will write you excellent letters of recommendation
- You will need to provide a research proposal or;
- if your program is non-research based you will need to identify the relevant courses, provide an explanation of your choice and outline your special interests in the proposed area of studies.
- if the output of your program is an artistic creation rather than a thesis, you will need to indicate the research component of your proposed work.
- Many Faculties will offer workshops, mentors, information sessions, etc. to help you to write a research proposal and prepare your application.
- Check the FGPS website regularly starting in Mid-August for up-to date information on application processes, deadlines and possible information and chat sessions that will be offered.
- Add to your agenda the deadlines – the deadlines are firm.
Provincial scholarships
Ontario
Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)
Value : $15,000 + Excellence Scholarships if attending the uOttawa
Duration : One year (non-renewable: you must apply every year)
May be held during the first 15 terms (5 yrs) of a PhD program (you must apply 8-12 months prior of the funding beginning)
- Minimum GPA of 8.0/10 (A-)
- Each university in Ontario receiving an OGS allocation administers the entire OGS application process and granting of OGS awards.
- Each university establishes their own deadlines
- OGS awards are not transferable between universities
- OGS awards are not transferable between faculties at UO
- You must submit an OGS application to each Ontario university with whom you are seeking admission to a graduate program
- You do not need to be a resident of Ontario
- Citizenship: be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person (under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protections Act (Canada)), temporary resident visa or student study permit at the time of the OGS application deadline.
Québec

Candidates must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (S.C. 2001, c.27).
- Be domiciled in Québec for at least 6 months
- Be resident of Québec within the meaning of Article 5 of the Health Insurance Act and the Regulation respecting eligibility and registration of persons in respect of the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec. (CQLR, c.A-29 and CQLR, c.A-29, r.1).

Tri-Agency - Doctoral and CGS-D Scholarships
Criteria common to all councils
- be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada;
- Intend to pursue, in the following year, full-time graduate studies and research in a PhD
- not have already received a doctoral scholarship or fellowship from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR to undertake or complete a doctoral degree or combined MA/PhD
- you must not hold, or have held, a CGS D, a Vanier CGS or a doctoral scholarship from NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC.
Criteria specific to NSERC
- hold, or expect to hold (at the time you take up the award), a degree in science or engineering from a university whose standing is recognized by NSERC (if you have a degree in a field other than science or engineering, NSERC may accept your application at its discretion).
- have obtained a first-class average (a grade of "A-") in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent).
- you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 24 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding.
Criteria specific to SSHRC
- be applying to pursue first PhD (or equivalent);
- be pursuing doctoral studies in the social sciences or humanities;
- as of December 31st of the year of applications, you must have completed between zero and 40 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the doctoral program for which your are requesting funding.
Criteria specific to CIHR
- All candidates must have completed a minimum of 12 months of graduate study at the Master's or PhD level and no more than 22 months in the Ph.D. as of the application deadline.
- Students who transferred from a Master’s to the PhD in less than 12 months are eligible to apply if they have no more than 30 months in the PhD and students who were admitted directly from a bachelor’s to the PhD are eligible to apply if they have no more than 34 months of PhD studies as of the application deadline.
Tri-Agency - Graduate scholarships
Applicants are evaluated and selected according to the general criteria in the following categories. However please consult each agency’s website for accurate evaluation criteria.
Academic excellence
- Weighting: 30%
- As demonstrated by past academic results, transcripts, awards and distinctions.
Research ability or potential
- Weighting: 50%
- As demonstrated by the applicant’s research history, his/her interest in discovery, the proposed research, its potential contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field, and any anticipated outcomes.
Communication, interpersonal and leadership abilities
- Weighting: 20%
- As demonstrated by the applicant’s past professional and relevant extracurricular interactions and collaborations.
Tri-Agency - Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning.
VALUE - $50,000 per year for 3 years
- Scholarships are available to both Canadian and international PhD students
- Students must be nominated by a recognized Canadian university with which they intend to pursue their PhD studies
- Candidates must apply via ResearchNet
- be seeking financial support to pursue your first doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD). Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;
- have completed no more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2017
- have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent (UO has defined a first class average to be 8.0/10 (A-)); and
- not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral degree.
Trudeau Foundation Scholarship
INTERNAL DEADLINE: November 24, 2016
Applications are submitted via the online portal
The annual value is up to $60,000 per Scholar (including an annual travel allowance of $20,000) for up to 4 years.

Eligibility
- Full-time first or second year students registered (or in the process of registering in a doctoral program in the humanities and social sciences; and
- Canadian citizens or permanent residents registered full-time in a doctoral program in Canada, or Canadian citizens registered full-time in a doctoral program outside of Canada. Up to one scholar in four per given year may be a foreign national registered full-time in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution.
Excellence Scholarship
- Awarded for the duration of the external award
- This scholarship will replace the Admission Scholarship
- Awarded to recipients of major external awards : CIHR, FRQ, NSERC, OGS, QEII-GSST, SSHRC
- The value of the scholarship is equivalent to the tuition fees, up to $10,000 per year
- There is no guarantee of a matching component from the academic units (however, many academic units continue with the matching component)
