The University of Ottawa encourages public dissemination of, and unrestricted access to, graduate research. Sometimes, however, usually when patents are involved, students can make an application for an embargo on access to their thesis, subject to approval of their supervisor, the academic unit and the faculty, but must do so before they submit the final electronic copy of the thesis to uO Research. The embargo is for a limited time period. To apply for an embargo period, before you submit the final version of your thesis electronically:
- Complete the embargo request form online at the uO Research Website.
- Print the form.
- Sign the form.
- Obtain your thesis supervisor's signature.
- Obtain the signature of the chair of the department.
- Submit the completed and signed form in person to the faculty.
The embargo request form must be submitted to the faculty before you deposit your thesis online.
Once the form has been returned to you, deposit your thesis online through uO Research. The embargo period applies only to the full-text of the thesis. Thesis metadata such as title, author and abstract will be publicly available in uO Research. Once selected, an embargo period is irrevocable. If you are uncertain about imposing an embargo, consult your supervisor. An embargo period will not be applied to a thesis after it has been submitted and approved online.
