We consider many factors when assessing requests for admission. Some of these factors include letters of recommendation, research areas, work experience (including lab experience), supervisor availability (if applicable) and funding availability.

Degree equivalency for international applicants

For admission to graduate studies, you must have an honours bachelor’s or other degree equivalent to a four-year Canadian bachelor’s.

Verify the equivalent degree from your country required for admission with our search tool to find out the degree equivalent you will need in order to do a master’s or doctorate degree with us.

Note that this tool is intended as a general reference and does not replace the admission process to graduate studies. As this tool serves as a guideline, it could occur that the admission requirements may be higher for some graduate program.

Regulation C-2.1.3: Direct Admission into Doctoral Program

Where permitted by specific doctoral programs, applicants who demonstrate advanced research ability may be granted direct admission to a doctoral degree program without completion of a Masters degree. A supervisor must be secured prior to application and support from the supervisor for direct admission must be provided.

Important: A letter of support from the supervisor must be sent to the appropriate program director. The final admission decision will be made by the Vice Dean.

Check the Language Requirements

Most courses at the Faculty of Medicine are taught in English, French, or both. Therefore, you must be proficient in the language of instruction for your program to be admitted.

Language Proficiency Proof

If your first language is not English or French, or if you did not complete full-time studies at an institution where either language is the main language of instruction; you need to provide proof of your proficiency in the language of instruction through an approved language test.

Language Test Exemptions

You may be exempted from taking an English or French language test if you have completed at least two years of full-time studies at an institution where English or French is the only language of instruction. To do so, you must provide one of the following:

  1. An attestation letter from your previous post-secondary institution confirming that the language of instruction was Englis or French.
  2. A transcript confirming your postsecondary studies were completed at an English or French-language university.
