The University of Ottawa has committed $200,000 and will seek donations to match that amount, making for a total of $400,000 in new funds to help refugees from Syria and other countries.

Donors have the option of supporting a variety of programs to help refugees:

The Refugee Sponsorship Support Program helps Canadian groups or individuals expedite the process of sponsoring refugees by matching them with pro-bono legal help from lawyers and law students.

The Certificate Program in Community Mobilization in Crisis program, offered jointly by uOttawa and the American University of Beirut, opens the door to post-secondary education for refugees in Lebanon. Students who complete the program will be equipped to create public service initiatives – such as schools, goods/services exchanges or daycares – or to engage in advocacy to help their communities.

The War Refugee Student Scholarship Fund will give refugee students the opportunity to study at uOttawa. The University will work with World University Services of Canada (WUSC) and other organizations to identify eligible Syrian students, including some who would be ready to begin their studies in January or September 2016.
