In Canada, there are more people over the age of 65 than under 15 and life expectancy is now longer than ever. By 2050, the world population over 60 will double. The changes are real. The impact is huge. This unprecedented change in demographics is perceived by some to be a threat to their livelihood while others see it as a blessing. One thing is for sure, the demographic changes present significant challenges and opportunities for all sectors of society. How does the rise of this segment of the population affect younger people as they make their way into the world with a voice? How does it impact older Canadians who wish to continue to contribute yet feel pushed out by the younger generation?

The LIFE Research Insitute will be hosting the Alex Trebek Forum: OK BOOMER; OK ZOOMER. Does age matter? To examine the evidence for public messages across news outlets and social media in relation to existing, ongoing or future impact of an older population on five areas of societal importance: discretionary time/leisure, employment, health services, housing, and technology. Five groups of students will discuss and share the facts, and undergo a question period, during which the audience will participate. The winning group will claim top prize!
