Inaugural Conference of the Music and Health Research Institute
May 3, 2023 to May 5, 2023
In May 2023, the Music and Health Research Institute (University of Ottawa), in partnership with the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre (The Royal Hospital) will host a series of multidisciplinary and intersectorial outreach activities focusing on the benefits of music engagement on health and wellbeing. These events will gather leading researchers from all across Canada, in the humanities and social sciences (music, education, and psychology), health sciences (rehabilitation, audiology, and speech therapy), sciences (neurosciences, biomechanics) and various domains of medicine.
Symposium activities will include:
- Three pre-conference events for medical staff and caregivers to explore how music can be beneficial for them as they are working under stress and at risk of burnouts.
- Post-conference events (May 7) for music teachers to improve their understanding of the links between music-making, health and wellbeing.
- An intensive 3-day conference (May 3 to 5) will feature six symposia, each providing scientific presentations, students’ thesis presentations and poster sessions, demonstrations, shared sessions, and round tables. We have opted for a symposia format that fosters extensive participation and discussions throughout. The public, patients and their families, will have access to the presentations, poster sessions and demonstrations.
- A "Music on Prescription" summit at the end of the conference (May 5) will come up with a plan of action, specific recommendations and concrete strategies for the development and implementation of Music in prescription i.e., in the long-term, embedding community music practices in primary health care
