Undergraduate admission scholarships and bursaries 2011-2012

Renewable Admission Scholarship*

Number: unlimited

Value: $1,000 to $4,000 (depending on scholarship average)

Eligibility criteria:

  • Be registered full time for the first time in an undergraduate program;
  • Meet the admission requirements of the faculty concerned (Arts, Engineering, Health Sciences, Science, Social Sciences, Telfer School of management or the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section) and be registered full-time;
  • Have a scholarship average between 80 and 100%, based on the following grid:

These amounts could be increased for some programs. No application is required, the scholarship is awarded automatically.

Renewal criteria: Scholarships may be renewed for three years following your first year of study for the same amount offered at the time of admission, provided that you:

  • Maintain full-time registration** in a direct-entry faculty or in the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section
  • Have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 8.5 or higher at the end of each academic year.

Note 1: You will be able to renew your scholarship at 50% of its annual value if you have a CGPA between 8.0 and 8.4 at the end of your academic year. Furthermore, you will be able to renew your scholarship for the full amount in a subsequent year if your CGPA increases to 8.5.

Note 2: The Renewable Admission Scholarships are replaced by the Nortel Networks Admission Scholarships at the University of Ottawa when candidates are admitted in computer engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering or computer science.

President's Scholarship*

Number: six (one for each direct-entry faculty)

Value: $30,000 ($7,500 per year)

Eligibility criteria:

  • Be registered full time for the first time in an undergraduate program;
  • Meet the admission requirements of the faculty concerned (Arts, Engineering, Health Sciences, Science, Social Sciences, Telfer School of management) and be registered full-time;
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or have protected person status;
  • Be bilingual (English and French);
  • Have a minimum scholarship average of 92%;
  • Have leadership qualities and a commitment to academic and extracurricular activities;
  • Submit an application form before the deadline date. 

Renewal criteria: Scholarships may be renewed for three years following your first year of study for the same amount offered at the time of admission, provided that you:

  • Maintain full-time registration** in a direct-entry faculty
  • Have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 8.5 or higher at the end of each academic year.

Note 1: You will be able to renew your scholarship at 50% of its annual value if you have a CGPA between 8.0 and 8.4 at the end of your academic year. Furthermore, you will be able to renew your scholarship for the full amount in a subsequent year if your CGPA increases to 8.5.

President's Scholarship for international students*

Number: 1

Value: $30,000 ($7,500 per year)

Eligibility criteria:

  • Be registered full time for the first time in an undergraduate program;
  • Meet the admission requirements of the faculty concerned (Arts, Engineering, Health Sciences, Science, Social Sciences, Telfer School of management) and be registered full-time;
  • Obtain a student visa (Canadian citizen, refugee, diplomat, permanent resident of Canada or student with protected person status are not eligible to apply to this scholarship);
  • Have leadership qualities and a commitment to academic and extracurricular activities;
  • Have a minimum scholarship average of 92% (or equivalent);
  • Submit an application form before the deadline date.

French Studies Bursary

Number: unlimited

Value: $4,000 ($1,000 per year) 

Eligibility criteria:

  • Be registered full time for the first time in an undergraduate program;
  • Meet the admission requirements of the faculty concerned (Arts, Engineering, Health Sciences, Science, Social Sciences, Telfer School of management or the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section) and be registered full-time;
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or have protected person status;
  • Be taking at least:
    • 9 credits+ (e.g. 3 courses) per session taught in French or
    • 6 credits+ (e.g. 2 courses) per session taught in French or in French as a second language (FLS) if you are in French Immersion Studies or in the Extended French Stream.

Renewal criteria: This bursary may be renewed for three years following your first year of studies, provided that you:

  • Maintain full-time registration** in a direct-entry faculty of in the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section
  • Are registered for at least
    • 9 credits+ (e.g. 3 courses) per session taught in French or
    • 6 credits+ (e.g. 2 courses) per session taught in French or in FLS, if you are in the French Immersion Studies or in the Extended French Stream.
  • Receive government financial aid for each renewal year, if you lived in the Ottawa/Gatineau++ region at the time you were admitted.

+Some exceptions may apply to students participating in an international exchange or in a program where they cannot take the required number of credits in French.

++The geographic boundary of the Ottawa-Gatineau region for the purpose of scholarship renewal includes all postal codes beginning with the following three letters:

Note: This bursary is awarded automatically to students who enroll in a French program, in French Immersion Studies or in the Extended French Stream. The amount is in addition to the amount of any other bursary you may receive except for the Education Bursary.

Education bursary

Education bursaries are given by the University of Ottawa to students who demonstrate financial need and who meet the eligibility criteria.

Number: unlimited

Value: $4,000 ($1,000 per year) 

Eligibility criteria:

  • Be registered full time for the first time in an undergraduate program;
  • Meet the admission requirements of the faculty concerned (Arts, Engineering, Health Sciences, Science, Social Sciences, Telfer School of management or the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section) and be registered full-time;
  • Apply by the deadline;
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or have protected person status;
  • Demonstrate financial need.

Renewal criteria: This scholarship may be renewed for three years following your first year of studies, provided that you:

  • Maintain full-time registration** in a direct-entry faculty or in the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section
  • Receive government financial aid for each renewal year.

Renewable Admission Scholarship for University Transfer Students*

Number: unlimited

Value: $1,000 to $4,000 (based on scholarship average)

Eligibility criteria:

  • Meet the admission requirements of the faculty concerned (Arts, Engineering, Health Sciences, Science, Social Sciences, Telfer School of management or the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section);
  • Be registered full-time in the first or second year of an undergraduate program, in a direct-entry faculty or at the Faculty of Law, Civil law Section;
  • Have a minimum high school or college scholarship average of 80%, at the time of admission to the previous University;
  • Have between 12 and 60 attempted1 university credits and have maintained a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) equivalent to 8,5 (82,5%2) at the University of Ottawa. The amount of the scholarship is determined by the scholarship average for high school studies (or college if applicable).

No application is required; the scholarship is awarded automatically. For some programs, the value of the scholarship could be increased.

Note: The Renewable Admission Scholarships are replaced by the Nortel Networks Admission Scholarships at the University of Ottawa when candidates are admitted in computer engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering or computer science.

Renewal criteria: Scholarships may be awarded for one, two or three years, for the same amount as at the time of admission, provided that the award holder obtains and maintains a CGPA of 8.5   (82.5%2) or higher and is registered full-time** (at least 12 credits per session) in one of the direct-entry faculties or the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section. Moreover, recipients who do not maintain a CPGA of 8,5 in any given year may have the scholarship reactivated in subsequent years if their CGPA increases to 8.5 and the full time status is kept at all times.

1Scholarship eligibility is determined by the number of attempted university credits and not by the number of credits received as advanced standing. If 11 university credits or less have been attempted, the scholarship average is based on high school marks (or college if applicable). Candidates with 61 attempted university credits or more and/or holders of bachelor's degree ARE NOT ELIGIBLE for an admission scholarship.

French for the Future - National Essay Contest

Canadian Parents for French Concours d'art oratoire Scholarship

Eligibility criteria:

  • Be registered full time for the first time in an undergraduate program;
  • Meet the admission requirements of the faculty concerned (Arts, Engineering, Health Sciences, Science, Social Sciences, Telfer School of management or the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section) and be registered full-time;
  • Be the First place winner in one of the five categories of the Canadian Parents for French National Concours d'art oratoire;
  • Be registered full time in a regular program and take at least nine credits per semester taught in French and/or French as a second language.
