Health insurance is mandatory for uOttawa students. When you visit the Student Health and Wellness Centre, eligible mental health services are billed to private insurance companies.

Billing explained

As of June 1, 2025, the Student Health and Wellness Centre has a new billing process for mental health services.

What does this mean for you?

  • No new out-of-pocket costs — You won’t need to pay upfront or submit claims yourself. We take care of the administrative process. If your insurance doesn’t cover the full cost of the services you need, the Student Health and Wellness Centre will absorb the difference, so you won’t be impacted.

How does billing work?

  • Book your appointment — Your first appointment will be a mental health intake assessment, during which your needs will be evaluated. The cost of this first appointment is covered by the Student Health and Wellness Centre. The cost of follow-up appointments for mental health services, if required, will be billed to your insurance provider.
  • Give your consent — If you’re scheduled for a follow-up mental health appointment at the Student Health and Wellness Centre, you’ll receive an online questionnaire via the Telus Health Collaborative Health Record (CHR). You must complete this questionnaire to share your insurance details.
  • Attend your session — No payment is required: the Student Health and Wellness Centre will bill your insurance provider directly.
