a. Community Service Learning (CSL)

Students can apply for up to 30 hours of credit if they participate in a humanities-related CSL activity. The MHC sets criteria for consideration of the award of credits. Students must successfully meet the usual evaluation requirements for CSL.

Examples:

• Student is using humanities directly in CSL work (e.g. working with music and the elderly in a long-term care facility).
• Student is using humanities to develop CSL project (e.g. collaborating with the inner city health team developing a humanities-based initiative to enhance health in marginalized populations).

 b. Leadership curriculum

Students can apply for up to 30 hours of credit if their leadership projects are linked to the humanities. The MHC sets criteria for consideration of the award of credits.

Example:

• Student leads a project to introduce works of art in Roger Guindon facilities.

 c. Interprofessional education (IPE) activities

Students can apply for up to 30 hours of credit if their IPE projects are linked to the humanities. The MHC sets criteria for consideration of the award of credits.

Example:

• Student has documented participation in the Student Interprofessional Games, currently offered through the Academic Health Council.

Students participating in student interest groups can apply for up to 30 hours of credit for humanities-related work. Documentation of an individual’s participation and role in the activities will be required. The MHC sets criteria for consideration of the award of credits.

Examples:

• Student participates in the organization and delivery of the student art show.
• Student participates in the development of a health and humour program for children at CHEO.
• Student participates in the publication of the Murmur magazine.

Students who participate in the Faculty of Medicine’s various organized initiatives can apply for up to 30 hours of credit. Documentation of participation and role is required.

The following activities are pre-approved: AiR workshops, Slice of Humanities noon time pizza lunch (worth 3 credits per presentation), International summer school, fourth year elective in Medicine and Humanities.

For all of these activities you still need to complete the “post-activity approval of credits form”

Students can apply for up to 30 hours of credits in any elective linked to the humanities that meets the criteria set out by the MHC. Documentation of the student’s participation and role in the activity will be required.

Examples:

• Student completes an elective with CHEO clown Molly Penny.
• Student completes an elective course in classics, anthropology or English literature.

Students may make a request for a creative project or activity of their choosing that isn’t taken into account in the category of credit above.

For example: Student describes a clinical situation where something significant was learned. The student may have observed or experienced compassion, an important moment of communication or collaboration, or a difficult ethical dilemma. The student should describe what was learned and how it enriched their role as a professional.
