The Immersion Entry Test determines if your French proficiency is adequate to succeed in university courses taught in French. The results of this test do not affect your application and admission to the University, only your entry to the French Immersion Stream. 

Description of the test

This test measures the 4 language skills (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking). Candidates who achieve a sufficient score in Listening and Reading will be asked to submit Writing and Speaking samples in order to refine your FLS course suggestions. The test must be done in one single session and each section of the test is timed. The test may take up to 2.5 hours to complete, but most people finish more quickly.  For more detailed information about each part of the test, consult this page from the Language Assessment office and select the Description of the Test dropdown. 

Test Fee: A $29.95 non-refundable fee will be added to your Statement of account which can be viewed in uoZone.

Platform requirements 

• The application is not compatible with smartphones and tablets. Please use a desktop computer with Windows, Mac or Linux desktop operating system.
• Stable high-speed internet.
• The browser Chrome is strongly recommended. Do not use Safari.
• Speakers or earphones for listening passages.
• A USB-connected microphone is required for speaking tests; Bluetooth is not recommended.
• Minimum resolution of 1024x768 but recommend resolution of 1368x768 and up

Request access to the Immersion Entry Test

Once you have received an offer of admission that includes French immersion:

• log in to uOLangTestportal using your student @uOttawa.ca email address and password. If that address is not yet activated, you may choose to edit your profile and replace it with an active email address.

• Find the Immersion Entry Test in the list of tests and click on the Request Access button next to it. You will receive an email granting you access to the test within 1-2 business days.

• Return to the portal to configure your preferences and try out the Practice Test to become familiar with format of the test. NOTE: the Practice Test does not provide any scores.   

Complete the Immersion Entry Test

• When you have enough time to complete the test (2.5 hours in all), log in again to uOLangTest, find the Immersion Entry Test and click on Start Test.  
• If your score is sufficient after completing the Listening and Reading parts, you will be asked to complete the Writing and Speaking parts.  
• Your full results will be available within 5 business days after writing the Test.  
• To access your results, open a session in the portal, find the Immersion Entry Test in the Test History section and click on the Result Report. You will see a brief text showing if you are eligible for the French Immersion Stream and the French as a Second Language (FLS) courses appropriate for you. The alphanumeric code you will see (e.g. F5, A2FM) is for our staff.  

If you are not eligible for the French Immersion Stream

If you do not successfully pass the Immersion Entry Test, the French Immersion Stream option will be removed from your profile of study. This will NOT affect your admission to your program of study at uOttawa.

You may retry the Immersion Entry Test, but you must wait two months between attempts. If you receive the test result required to be admissible before September, contact us to reinstate the French immersion option.

Also, you can still continue to learn French by:

• Participating in a summer program like Explore, in which you adventure to a new region of Canada while learning French;
• Taking intensive French courses over the summer, before you arrive at uOttawa and trying the Immersion Entry Test again;
• Taking French-as-a-Second-Language courses (FLS) in your first year and joining the French Immersion Stream in a later semester.
