The University of Ottawa Department of Family Medicine will partner with the University of Guyana and Georgetown Public Hospital Institute of Health Science Education to establish a sustainable, community focused, Guyanese-specific postgraduate Family Medicine training program that will train physicians in the art and science of primary health care.

About Guyana

Guyana is a small Caribbean country located in continental South America, with a population of over 735,000. Health indicators for the Guyanese people are relatively poor. In 2017, the physician to population ratio was approximately 2:10 000.

The University of Guyana medical school graduates 20-30 doctors per year, however, within two years of graduation, >80% of graduates leave Guyana to pursue further training elsewhere. In response, the Georgetown Public Hospital Institute of Health Science Education has started to create postgraduate medical education training programs to attempt to increase physician retention and patient care.

Vision

To improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Guyana through the strengthening of a primary health care based system that ensures universal access to quality health services without discrimination.

Mission Statement

To establish a sustainable, community-focused, Guyanese-specific postgraduate Family Medicine training program that will train physicians in the art and science of primary care.

Guyana is among the countries with the highest suicide rates in the world, and the training of Guyanese physicians in the diagnosis and management of mental health disorders is a crucial step in a national suicide prevention plan.
