The Primrose Family Medicine Centre is our newest family medicine teaching unit at the University of Ottawa. The centre is part of the multi-disciplinary Bruyère Family Health Team.

About Us

We have a dynamic and friendly team of physicians and allied health professionals working and learning together in a multidisciplinary teaching environment. We offer:

  • A dedicated procedure room for minor surgical procedures, with an ECG machine and liquid nitrogen;
  • Convenient access to Xray services with immediate viewing abilities;
  • Teaching sessions which include: CCFP core 99 topics, Allied health teaching, palliative care teaching, Ethics, Journal club, Problem-based learning and behavioral medicine; and,
  • Well baby clinic, prenatal clinic, Inner city Health, Procedures Clinic, MSK clinic, smoking cessation clinic, care of the elderly clinic, dermatology clinic, and a shared mental health clinic.

We are the sister site to the Bruyère Family Health Team, so all allied health workers, after hours clinics, master schedule, FMOB teaching, and call schedules are shared between our sites.

Teaching and Learning Opportunities

We assign each resident a preceptor for your two year residency. The preceptor supervises your work on your weekly half-day back, when you return to the unit to ensure that your patients get continuous and consistent care. Other staff preceptors will also supervise you while you are in-unit in the core family medicine block time at the Primrose Family Medicine Centre.

We strive to provide a flexible postgraduate training program in a bilingual environment that gives our graduates the confidence to function well in any setting.

Our program promotes a patient-centered and holistic approach to family medicine. Our multidisciplinary team includes allied health professionals who consult and teach. We offer instruction in family medicine competencies, palliative care, ethics, problem-based learning and behavioural medicine. We also teach effective interview and doctor-patient relationship skills within the patient-centered clinical method.

Patient Population

Our patient population is very diverse and multiethnic, as our catchment area includes the western portion of the downtown core of Ottawa, Chinatown and Little Italy. We offer prenatal and obstetric care, as well as adult care, geriatric care and palliative care, with an emphasis on home visits. You will also be exposed to inner city health, HIV medicine and global health at our unit.
