A tribute to Andrea

Students in a lecture hall

Friends and family have created a scholarship to honour the memory of Andrea Papiernik Mendelsohn, an exceptional uOttawa alumna who died on Nov 8th, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Andrea, who graduated from uOttawa in 2005, began her career as an oncology nurse at the Ottawa Hospital. She moved to California not long after graduation and spent the rest of her career at the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.  She was an exemplary nurse, committed to promoting excellence in patient care.  Her indomitable spirit, love for life, and selfless nature touched countless patients and families over her career.  She was a loving wife, mother and friend.

Her life was short, but meaningful.  Her strength was always tempered by softness and she exuded gratitude in everything she did.

To honour Andrea’s life and carry forward on her legacy, her close friends have created a memorial bursary in her name. The Andrea Papiernik Mendelsohn Scholarship will be awarded annually to a full time, University of Ottawa nursing student who embodies the qualities that Andrea valued: a passion for nursing and willingness to go above and beyond, exceptional leadership skills, being a team player, and a commitment to living a meaningful and fulfilling life.
