February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and honor the contributions and accomplishments of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, equitable and prosperous nation it is today. This month we are featuring the incredible story of Senator Bernadette Clement, LLL ’87 & LLB ’88, a lawyer, politician, and social justice activist who was the first Black woman to serve as a mayor in Ontario.

The passing of Senator Josée Forest-Niesing in November 2021 was a great loss to our community. A proud Franco-Ontarian, Senator Forest-Niesing was known as a passionate advocate for the rights and concerns of French-speaking Canadians. While she had a long and distinguished career practicing law in her hometown of Sudbury and in the Senate and held several notable appointments including President of L’Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario (AJEFO), her journey began right here at the University of Ottawa where she completed the Programme de common law en français (PCLF) in 1988, and was inducted into the Common Law Honour Society in 2013.

Senator Bernadette Clement, LLL ‘87, LLB ‘88: Bridging the gap between social justice and the Senate of Canada

uOttawa alumna Bernadette Clement, LLL ’87 and LLB ‘88, made history in 2018 when she became the first Black woman in Ontario to be elected as mayor. She was also the first woman to become mayor of Cornwall. Less than three years later, in June 2021, she became the fourth Black woman appointed to the Senate of Canada.
First Year Students Participate in 2021 Annual Nelligan Moot

The 14th edition of the annual Nelligan Law First Year Moot Court Competition was held on November 13-15, 2021. Over 140 first-year students in the English Program competed in the preliminary rounds, held on the morning of November 13. The 1L students were divided into hearings with two appellant counsel facing off against two respondent counsel. In a competition first, all hearings were held online, allowing 57 judges from across Canada and abroad (including one in London, England!) to judge.

Canadian Lawyer describes the winners as possessing the “ability to influence public opinion and to help shape the laws of this country and others, contribute to the strength and quality of legal services, involvement and impact within the justice community, and social and political influence and involvement.”

On November 12, 2021, Mayor Jim Watson revealed this year’s inductees to the Order of Ottawa. Among the 15 names were two proud uOttawa Common Law alumni: Dr. Danielle Lussier, LLB ‘07, LLM ’08, Law PhD ’21 and Daljit S. Nirman, LLM ’02. This award recognizes exceptional residents who have made important contributions that benefit of the citizens of Ottawa. Mayor Watson calls the inductees “remarkable individuals who have gone above and beyond to improve the lives of those in our community through their professional accomplishments.”

Sarah Alasaly, was born in Ottawa and grew up in Vancouver, B.C. After starting her career in the health sector as a registered nurse, she chose to come back to Ottawa to do her JD. She obtained her degree in 2017 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2017. She was subsequently called to the B.C. Bar in 2018.
We recently had the opportunity to interview this female entrepreneur to learn about what motivated her to start an independent family law firm, Alasaly Law Group, during a pandemic and quickly grow it to a four-person team in Victoria, BC.

Congratulations to the organizers and the cast of this year’s FTX Production’s Time Capsule Musical, released on YouTube on March 19, 2021.
A cast of 15 actor-singers were featured in the first-ever virtual Musical presented by FTX Productions. The “DIY” musical is a medley of songs from various musicals. Each individual member had to perform and film themselves from the safety of their own home. Dispersed all over Canada, working in different time zones, they were able to assemble for their audience an hour filled with joy, dance and singing.

In December 2020, Air Canada announced that its President and Chief Executive Officer, Calin Rovinescu, LLB ’80, was to retire on February 15th, 2021.
Throughout the years, Calin Rovinescu has kept close ties with his alma mater. He solidified these ties by becoming the University of Ottawa Chancellor in 2015. His term continues until 2022.

University of Ottawa Faculty of Law Launches Multi-Year Scholarships for Black Law Students

The Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa is launching new entrance scholarships for Black law students.
These scholarships will provide $10,000 to up to five entering Black law students each year. The scholarships will be renewable for $5,000 in each of the second and third year of law school for a total value of $20,000 for each student.

MakerLaunch is an initiative that supports University of Ottawa students or recent alumni in their entrepreneurial goals by helping them to launch new start-ups and fast track the commercialization of their technologies.
The program was founded by University of Ottawa alumni and is managed by two-time alumna Midia Hassan. In addition to access to a pool of talent, mentors and coaches, the program offers entrepreneurs a seed grant of $50,000 earned over nine months of milestones.

On February 28th, The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences hosted a Big Thinking lecture event featuring Mr. Allan Rock, President Emeritus of the University of Ottawa, former Senior Advisor to the World Refugee Council, Professor in the uOttawa Faculty of Law, and former federal minister. The lecture, entitled A call to action: Rethinking leadership in the global response to forced migration, drew on a recent report from the World Refugee Council and called for those present to take action in the area of forced migration.
Big Thinking on the Hill is a breakfast lecture series which brings leading Canadian researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities to Parliament to speak on policy-relevant topics with members of Parliament, senators, public servants, and other stakeholders.
Big Thinking is a key activity of the Federation in promoting the importance and relevance of research in its disciplines. Delivering a lecture is a privilege offered only to researchers from the Federation’s member universities and partners.
Many MPs, Senators, and others attended the event, and it was clear from participants’ engagement that they valued the opportunity to learn from Mr. Rock and his insights and research.

David Scott, OC, QC, LL.B. 1960, D.U. 2001, has passed away at the age of 83. Mr Scott had a relationship with the University of Ottawa that spanned more than six decades. He was fiercely proud of his alma mater and continued to take an interest in the faculty and its students until his final days.
