Available positions, English Common Law Program, 3 tenure track positions

The University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law, Common Law Section (English) invites applications for 3 entry level tenure track positions to commence July 1, 2024.

We will consider candidates who can make significant contributions to enhancing our faculty expertise and programmatic needs in any area, but we have particular current needs in the areas of indigenous law, critical race theory, environmental law, dispute resolution, private law (including property and torts), business law, and labour and employment law.

Applicants must have a graduate degree in law or its equivalent, a distinguished academic record, and a record of, or the promise of, achievement as a teacher and scholar.

About the Common Law Section

The Common Law Section offers Juris Doctor degrees in English and in French.  Together with the Civil Law Section, the Common Law Section offers master’s and doctoral programs.  The Common Law Section has over 1,200 students in JD programs and over 200 in graduate programs.  We are an innovative and international faculty of more than 60 full-time professors dedicated to inclusive teaching and research, located in Canada’s capital. 

Position title: Assistant professor.

Terms: These tenure-track positions are in the English Common Law Program.

Location of work:  University of Ottawa, 57 Louis Pasteur Pvt., Ottawa, ON Canada.

Salary and benefits: According to the current Collective Agreement. Salaries are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties: Professors’ functions include teaching, an active scholarly agenda, academic service to the Faculty and University, and supervision of graduate students.

Skills requirements

  • Demonstrated expertise in indigenous law, environmental law, critical race theory, dispute resolution, private law (including property and torts), business law, or labour and employment law.
  • An undergraduate degree in common law, and either a doctorate in law or a related discipline (or enrolment in a soon-to-be-completed doctoral program). For applicants currently enrolled in a doctoral program, their supervisor must confirm that their dissertation will be submitted prior to their appointment.
  • A superior academic record, a strong background in research and publication, including external research funding or the potential for such funding, and the capacity for excellence in teaching and contribution to the academic life and governance of the Common Law Section.
  • Strong communication skills. Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada is a requirement for tenure.
